IV-SM-2-SBr; At the intersection of El Camino Real and Crystal Springs Road, 1951-1953. Right of way acquisition documents for parcels of land in San Mateo County. This file involves a building at 299 El Camino Real needed for the extension of Junipero Serra Boulevard from Sneath Lane to Crystal Springs Road west of San Bruno. The Division of Highways felt this project would increase traffic at El Camino and Crystal Springs Road. The intersection was "impaired" by a two-story frame building with commercial and residential use. The first floor was largely occupied by the Carpenters' Union. The second floor was an apartment. A lengthy written description of the building and photographs are included. |

Notes |
The structure was constructed in 1910 and was still in good condition. Great photos show it and, across Crystal Springs Road, a Lucky store, then a Safeway. The Lucky's property was just south of the historic Uncle Tom's Cabin until the roadhouse was moved in 1950. In 1912, the State created its first stretch of highway for automobiles on El Camino at San Bruno adjacent to Uncle Tom's Cabin. One wonders what role the building needed removal played in the colorful history of the roadhouse. The file explains the building to be removed was at 299 El Camino. The Lucky was on the north side of Crystal Springs at 333 El Camino and was "perhaps the finest and largest Lucky store..." The Lucky store was earlier victim to a 1949 fire but had been rebuilt by 1951. Pictured is the Safeway which actually occupied the Uncle Tom's site. Its address was 345 El Camino. Also pictured in the "comparable" section are the properties owned by the famous Molloy family. (Mitch Postel 2020) |
