Plaque commemorating Charles Johnson being inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame on May 17, 1989. Plaque includes image of Johnson and a brief biography: "Charles Johnson, a graduate of Sequoia High School in Redwood City, took his Peninsula basketball training to the ultimate. He played and often started on two NBA championship teams. / Johnson, at 5 foot 11, twice was named Most Valuable Player of the South Peninsula Athletic League while at Sequoia. He then went on to attend a play for the University of California at Berkeley where he won the Naismith Award, given annually to the best player in the U.S. under 6 feet in height, his senior year. / Johnson went to the Golden State Warriors of the NBA as a sixth-round draft choice, and his teams never had a losing season. He was part of a 1974-75 Golden Gate championship team which swept the Washington Bullets in four straight games. It was the first NBA crown in the Bay Area club's history. / The following year, his Warriors produced their best -ever record, winning 59 games. Traded to the Washington Bullets, he next was part of yet another professional titlist in 1977-78. It was the Bullets' first championship in 30 years." |
