Image of 1983.203 - Captain H. J. Reilly Auxilliary United Spanish War Veterans Banner, 1926. Satin banner with decorative trim hangs from a brass-colored pole. The front of the banner is constructed with blue satin that is machine embroidered in a chain stitch with gold-colored lettering. Gold-colored trim that is 1" wide is sewn around the edges and 1.75" long twisted fringe hangs down from the bottom edge. The banner has a 11" x 29.5" satin flap attached to the top that has a scalloped lower edge. This piece is also decorated with gold-colored trim and fringe.  Text on the banner from top to bottom reads, "CAPTAIN H. J. REILLY  /  AUXILIARY  /  UNITED SPANISH  /  WAR VETERANS  /  INSTITUTED AUG. 28, 1926  /  REDWOOD CITY.  /  CALIF." An embroidered emblem in the center of the banner shows a white cross with yellow edging within a circular wreath of gold-colored leaves. A red star with eight points appears behind the cross and the points extend over the border of leaves. Within the cross, "NATIONAL * AUXILIARY  /  * U. S. W. V. * is embroidered with gold-colored thread inside a circular border that frames an image of two soldiers in a landscape who are holding rifles and stand on either side of a kneeling a female figure.  The back of the banner is lined with green satin. The banner is sewn to four metal rings along the top edge, and a metal pole with a wooden core slides through the metal rings for hanging. A gold-colored cord is tied to the two outer rings at the top of the banner and hangs down on either side. Each end of the cord has a large gold-colored 1.25" diameter tassel.
