Description Wood and acrylic plaque commemorating John Madden of Jefferson High School, who was inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame on May 17, 1989. Plaque includes image of Madden and a brief biography: "John Madden, who graduated from Jefferson High School, was a three-sport star at the Daly City institution. He played baseball, basketball and football. But it was as a professional football coach that he forged a national reputation. / Madden was the head coach of the NFL's Oakland Raiders for 10 seasons. His teams made the NFL playoffs eight times. Madden's Raiders won Super Bowl XI in Pasadena. His overall record with Oakland was 103-32-7. At the time, Madden was only the second NFL head coach to win 100 games in 10 years. / Madden attended the College of San Mateo and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. He was an all-conference tackle at the latter school, which produced an overall 18-2 record during Madden's two seasons there. / Madden was drafted by the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles in 1958, but a knee injury ended his playing career. He moved on to coaching at Hancock Junior College in Santa Maria. He coached next at San Diego State. He was hired as an assistant coach by the Raiders in 1967. Two years later, he was named head coach at Oakland."
