Description Quilt Award presented to Mrs. E.C. Foster for Silk Quilt and Table Cover, 1860. Round copper coin medal rests in the center flap of a black paper case with red velvet lining. On one side is an embossed seated female figure in a toga with a wreath on her head. Beside her is a shield with an embossed muscular arm wielding a hammer. Figure's right foot rests on an anvil and various machinery parts are at her feet. Behind her to her right is a steam train on a bridge and to her left is a building or cityscape. Beneath image text reads, "F.N. MITCHELL SC." Other side of coin has embossed text encircled just inside outer edge that reads, "MASSACHUSETTS CHARITABLE MECHANIC ASSOCIATION / FOUNDED 1795 INCOR.1806." Etched into center is: "AWARD TO / Mrs. F.C.Foster / FOR / SILK QUILT / AND / TABLE COVER. / EXHIBITION OF / 1860." Between two sections of text is an embossed wreath of flowers and vines interrupted at top, bottom and sides by embossed ovals with pictures of figures, an arm with a hammer and a building.

Notes [http://www.mcma1795.us/] " Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association (MCMA) was founded in 1795, with Paul Revere as it’s first president, and incorporated in 1806. It’s founding members had met initially to address the problem of runaway apprentices, but ultimately established MCMA as an organization committed to promote the mechanical arts and provide funds for members’ widows and families."
