Japanese Empress Dairi-hina Girl's Day Doll, n.d. Empress dairi-hina doll (A) that sits atop a Japanese Girls' Day display during Hina Matsuri "Festival of the hina dolls." Made in Japan. Female figure has white porcelain head and white plastic hands. Her long black hair is secured in a top-knot with brown cordage and a gold crown at top and she has a long plait that extends twice the length of her back and is secured with white and gold ribbons. She is wearing a pink coral-colored robe printed with white birds (ducks?) with golden details. Robe has a wide orange-coral-colored collar in front with a textured diamond motif. Beneath this layer is a tan fabric with a dark gray, blue, olive and coral floral motif. The sleeves and neck of his robe is lined with layers of gold, green, violet and red fabric, with additional layers of white at neck. There is a white 'cape' secured to the figure's back with a black that extends 5" behind the figure above the colored layers of fabric. Around figure's waist is a white sash decorated with blue, white, red, yellow and green cordage along its length. Bottom of doll is wrapped in red fabric. Accessory that came with doll is a decorative fan with long multi-colored tassels.
Also includes two bases: larger bottom base (B) is painted solid black lacquer along outer edges while smaller top base (C) is covered in sewn plant material with fabric-lined edges front and back. The top edge of front and back has a striped green, tan, blue, brown, indigo and orange motif printed with diamonds. This wraps around corner to side edges which are also covered in the sewn plant fiber. Front of base has matching printed fabric while fabric on back is solid red.
