Description Tincture Merthiolate, c. 1941-1945. Part of Block Warden's first aid kit used during World War II by Gladys M. Browning of Burlingame, CA. Square blue glass bottle with beveled corners and black plastic screw cap. A paper label with dark red text on a white background is adhered to the front of the bottle. Text from top to bottom reads, "TINCTURE MERTHIOLATE / LILLY / A colored Alcohol-Acetone-Aqueous / 1:1000 solution of Sodium Ethyl / Mercuri Thiosalicylate, Lilly. / Alcohol 50%, Acetone 10%. / A FIRST AID ANTISEPTIC. / For External Use Only / NET CONTENTS 1 OZ. / REPACKAGED BY / SONTAG / DRUG STORES / FILLED AT [blank space to fill in by hand]." "Sontag" appears in large cursive font with white letters in a red rectangle. "DRUG STORE" is printed in red and appears in the elongated tail of the 'g' in "Sontag". Marks molded into the glass on the bottom of the bottle include an "X" at top center, an "M" in a circle at center, and "5" at bottom center.
