Description Wine Barrel Spigot, c. 1925-1939. Spigot is made of maple wood and consists of two parts. One part is long and tapers in towards the end. The thinner end is open. Towards the wider, top end, is a hole that goes through it. Inserted through this hole is the second component to the spigot, which has a post that sticks through hole. On the post is a circular cut-out, on one side. This is covered when inserted. Preventing the post from going all the way through the hole, is a bulbous end. The bulbous end has a post going through it as well, that is to be used as a lever to turn the component.

Provenance These articles were used by the donor's father in the late 1920s and 1930s for wine making. #1 was used to seal bung barrels after wine was made. #2 was used to stop fermentation in wine in barrell--syphon was placed in glass of water so gases from barrel could escape, but air could not get back into barrel. Donor's dad and donor bought carloads of grapes from Livermore and St. Helena, CA to sell to Italian friends and relatives in South San Francisco.
