Description Albert Henry Payson Framed Certificate of Membership into the Society of Colonial Wars, 1896. Printed and handwritten paper certificate with a thick red wax seal and maroon and white silk cord mounted under glass beneath a thick white mat inside a brown stained oak wooden frame. Certificate reads, "General Society of Colonial Wars / To all whom it may concern. / Greeting. Know ye, this is to certify that on the first / day of September, in the year of our Lord 1896, and in the year of this / Society the fifth, Albert Henry Payson / Gentleman was duly elected an Hereditary Member of the / Society of Colonial Wars in the State of California. by right of his descent from Philip Eliot, Member of the Ancient and honorable / Artillery Co. 1638, Deputy to General Court of Massachusetts 1654-1657. / In Witness Whereof:--We have herunto signed our names / and affixed the Great Seal of the General Society / Countersigned by Officers' / of the Society of the State of California. / Holdridge Ozco Collins Governor. / Charles Putnam Femmer Secretary. / Edward Thomas Hardin Registrar. / Frederic J. dePeyster, Governor General. / Howland Pell Secretary General. / Geo. Norberry MacKenzie Registrar General." Imagery of weapons, soldiers, shields and an American Indian is printed in the left and top margins. Inscription text: "GENERAL SOCIETY OF COLONIAL WARS / ..." (text embossed on wax seal)
