One of San Mateo County's premier long distance men, he got into the sport by chance at San Mateo High School. By the time he closed out his prep career in the 1980s, he had captured both the 1,600- and 3,200- meter runs at the Central Coast Section meet, the first time anyone had accomplished that dual feat. He became a four-time all-American at the University of Arizona as a Pac-10 champion in both cross-country and track. He was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team in 1996."
