Description I. Magnin & Co. Brimless Cloche, c. 1920s-1930s. Red felt brimless cloche or pillbox hat is dome-shaped with a 1 1/2" wide pink ribbed ribbon at base that is tied into a bow on one side. A similar pink ribbon is sewn on interior edge. There is a white makers mark stamped into underside of crown and a blue I. Magnin label at interior edge.

Provenance Purchased and worn by donor in San Mateo County; donor lived in Atherton, CA.
Notes Mary Ann Magnin and Isaac Magnin opened their first store in 1876. The business would expand to have locations in Union Square, San Francisco and San Mateo. In 1944, the department store Bullocks bought the I. Magnin & Co. chain. In the 1980s Macys bought Bullocks and I. Magnin & Co.
