|Description||Square-in-square Patchwork Quilt, c. 1883-1885. Quilt is comprised of silk, velvet, satin, and multicolored square-in-square blocks. Many styles of fabric are used including solids, plaids, stripes, and flocked velvet. Quilt is hand-pieced and hand-quilted with various colors of thread including white, tan, and blue but red and maroon ribbon binding has been machine-stitched and overlaps outer blocks. There are 224 finished 5" blocks comprised of 3.5" squares in center, surrounded by four triangles. There is a 10" block in center that has a green embroidered vine with white daisies on a light blue ground with pink edges on two sides. Many of the inner squares are embroidered or appliquéd, and one block has a line drawing in ink of a female figure whose hair is up. Other motifs include a shoe, baby rattles and floral motifs. Several blocks have cursive inscriptions handwritten in ink including "MRS H. C. Moills" on a gold half-circle blanket stitched to a red silk square, 5 rows down from top and, two blocks in from left. Nine rows down from top and one block in from left, "J. B. Hearscht" is written in blue ink on the ribbon portion of a drawing. The ribbon is at the bottom and in front of a cloud with two birds flying above). The drawing is above two hand-embroidered rattles on an off-white square block ground. "B L" appears 11 rows down from top and two blocks in from left. Pink flowers with green stems are painted on a block that is 10 rows down from top and 13 blocks in from left. The quilt backing is red cotton.|
