He may be unique in the annals of San Mateo County high school and community college athletics. Primarily a basketball player during those formative years, Conner only dabbled in Football, playing the sport in his senior year at SSF. He played only basketball during his one year at CSM. As a transfer at College of the Pacific, Conner was, again, a basketball star. But he went out for football in his senior year. He then was spotted by the Forty-Niners of the NFL, made the professional team as a walk-on and wound up leading the club in receiving on several occasions. Conner played eight seasons for the San Francisco club."
