Description Red Cross Gauze, c. 1941-1945. Part of Block Warden's first aid kit used during World War II by Gladys M. Browning of Burlingame, CA. Unopened cardboard box of sterile gauze is printed with a blue ink background and red, white, and yellow text and graphics. The front of the box has a yellow and red rectangular border with a red cross graphic in each upper interior corner. Text in large white font at top center reads, "RED CROSS GAUZE." Smaller text continues below, "STERILE - 1 YD SQUARE - TYPE III (28 X 24) / CAUTION - Sterility of contents is not guaranteed if package has been damaged or previously opened." "Johnson & Johnson / NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. CHICAGO ILL.." printed in red at bottom center within the border. The ends of the box have a white circle with the same style yellow and red border. Text in blue and red from top to bottom reads, "RED CROSS / STERILE / GAUZE / 1 YARD SQUARE / Johnson & Johnson / NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. CHICAGO ILL." A red cross appears just above the word "STERILE". The back of the box has a perforated horizontal line and text that reads, "TO OPEN CUT HERE / TO CLOSE TUCK IN FLAP / MADE IN U.S.A."
