Description Plaque commemorating Les Steers being inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame on May 23, 1996. Plaque includes image of Steers and a brief biography"Les Steers was a track and field pace-setter and, at the time, may not have always realized the magnitude of his accomplishments. In 1941, at the University of Oregon, he once high-jumped what was believed to be at least 7 feet indoors at halftime of a basketball game. It was more of an exhibition than anything else. The mark was not recognized. / The height wasn't even measured until the next day. Later that year, however, the College of San Mateo alum set the then world record at 6-11 and that standard remained such for another 12 years. / Steers is a member of the U.S. Track and Field Hall of Fame and the Oregon Athletic Hall of Fame."
