Description Saint Matthew Catholic Church Bell, 1861. Bell from the first Saint Matthew Catholic Church building in San Mateo. Was donated to the church by local resident Peter M. Donahue, who cast it at Union Iron Works, his San Francisco iron foundry, in 1861. Solid iron bell has a small top with long flared sides that end at embossed band near base. Base flares up to a flat top with a smaller raised section in the center. There is a hole in the top center where a clapper once resided. "UFSF, CAL 1861, DONAHUE" is embossed just below the top edge of main section of bell.
