Description Wood and acrylic plaque commemorating Erik van Dillen of Burlingame High School who was inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame on May 16, 1990. Plaque includes image of van Dillen and a brief biography: "Erik van Dillen was a student at Burlingame High School in the 1960s when he surfaced as America's dominant junior player. He won 14 teenage national titles and took nearly every age-group trophy available. / For the next 11 years, he played professionally and was ranked as high as sixth nationally in singles play. In 1973, he captured the Nottingham, England, singles tournament title, and five years later he upset John McEnroe in a five-set first-round match at Wimbledon. / A graduate of University of Southern California, van Dillen was one of the premier doubles players of all time. In 1972 in Rumania (sic) he and partener Stan Smith would help the United States win the Davis Cup. / In Davis Cup competition in 1973, against Chile, van Dillen and Smith were trailing 9-7 and 39-37 (a 3-hour, 45-minute set) before coming back to win the next three sets and the match, 8-6, 6-1 and 6-3. It proved to be one of the great Davis Cup duels of all time. / Van Dillen later played for Seattle in World Team Tennis before retiring in 1984."
