"Glenn Reeves: Family affair at Hillsdale High
San Mateo County Times
POSTED: 04/02/2009 02:02:33 PM PDT | UPDATED: 7 YEARS AGO
TWO YEARS AGO, Randy Metheany retired as Hillsdale High School boys basketball coach. He had coached at the school since he was 22.
In his mid-50s, he felt it was time to turn it over to Brett Stevenson, his younger, more energetic disciple.
It turned out to be a short retirement. Hillsdale came calling, and Metheany was there to answer.
Hillsdale athletic director Brad Zucker told Metheany he needed a softball coach, and time was running out, his back was against the wall. So Metheany has returned to the school he loves, coaching softball.
"It's kind of ironic," Metheany said. "I never thought I'd coach softball again, but I'm having a lot of fun."
Once again, Metheany is grooming his successors.
"I'm just going to fill in for a few years until Maureen Brady and Michelle Driscoll are ready to take over,'' Metheany said. "I want to give it to them, let them take it and run.''
You see, it's all a family affair at Hillsdale.
Metheany grew up in the neighborhood..."
