Description San Mateo County Sheriff's Office sap, c. 1970s used by Captain Roger Goad. This leaded leather sap is black in color has a hole in one end through which a leather strap is attached. Leather is stitched along the edge with two rows of stitching along the wider lower end. Top end is narrow, five inches in length and serves as a grip. A sap pocket is standard issue in uniform pants and that is where the sap would be carried. It was used in fights to strike opponents in the back of the head.
