Collection Archival Collection
Object Name Negative
Category Photographs
Date 1963
Description Nudist Convention at Sheraton Villa Motor Inn, San Mateo, 1963. Black and white negative shows the exterior of the Sheraton Villa Motor Inn. A pole sign with an area for changeable text reads, “WELCOME / NUDIST / CONVENTION.” The photograph is shot near ground level looking upward toward the sign with the Inn at left and a public sidewalk leading to other businesses at right. The image of a young boy wearing only a hat and shoes appears at bottom center. The boy faces away from the camera and walks toward the building holding a United Airlines duffle bag. Part of a series.

Photographer Norton Pearl notes, "This was a publicity picture for the hotel. We were talking with [the] hotel and at the time anything a little 'racy' like a nudist convention was likely to get some newspaper space so the child was the 'twist' we came up with for a nude subject...I used the [United Airlines] bag to give one of my other good clients a little extra plug."
