Description Civil Rights Protesting at San Mateo City Hall, February 1964. Black and white negative of civil rights protestors picketing outside San Mateo City Hall. The photograph was taken from inside City Hall, looking out onto the street through a large window. The reversed sign on the glass reads, "CITY OF SAN MATEO / CITY HALL." Outside on the sidewalk are seven African Americans holding picket signs. The handwritten signs read from left to right, (illegible due to glare), "HUMAN / RELATION / NOW," "WE / SHALL / OVERCOME," "Where / ARE / MEN WITH / INTEGRITY," (signed turned away from camera), "INCONSIDERATE / CITY / COUNCIL" and "ASK NOT What / FEP CAN DO / for YOU, BUT / What CAN / SAN MATEO / DO FOR / HUMAN RIGHTS."
