Image of 2014.027 - The Bay Meadows Racecourse records documents the activities of the organization and of the founder, William P. Kyne, from 1901-2008.  The bulk of the materials consist of photographs, clippings and audiovisual materials from 1936-2008.  The photographic images consist of photographs, photograph albums, slides, negatives, proof sheets, digital images and a small number of souvenir photographs from restaurants.  There is also a large number of clippings and scrapbooks as well as audiovisual materials in the form of 16mm reels, videocassettes, audiocassettes and DVDs.  The audiovisual materials are predominantly recordings of races. Among other formats in the collection is a small amount of correspondence, publications, meeting notices, as well as artifacts such as awards, calendars, plaques, certificates and posters. 

The collection chronicles the horses, jockeys, trainers, horse owners, races, events, spectators, physical plant, employees and operations of the racetrack throughout its existence.  Among the photographs are many of the biggest names in the sport including Russell Baze, Victor Espinoza, Bill Shoemaker, Lost in the Fog, Casual Lies as well as Bay Meadows executives including: Bill Kyne, Bob Gunderson and Joe Cohen.  There are also some photographs of celebrities and public figures such as Joe DiMaggio, Bing Crosby, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, members of the Saudi royal family and Senator William F. Knowland.    

The records are arranged in six series.  The contents of each series have been arranged chronologically with the exception of Series II and III which are arranged alphabetically.  The series arrangement of the records is as follows:

Series I: Clippings Scrapbooks, 1936-1949, 1970, 1991
This series comprises five large scrapbooks of news clippings that were created by Bay Meadows employees.  The bulk of the materials are from 1936-1949 with two other smaller scrapbooks from 1970 and 1991.  Every page of these scrapbooks have been digitally photographed by the Bay Meadows Library.  The series is arranged chronologically.   

Series I spans catalog records 2014.027.008.001 - 2014.027.008.018

Series II: Records, 1940-2008
Series II comprises records of Bay Meadows.  This series largely consists of news clippings along with a small number of correspondence, publicity materials, shareholder meeting notices and guest registers for the Bay Meadows Library.  Most of the clippings have been scanned by the staff of the Bay Meadows Library.  The series is arranged alphabetically.

Series III: Photographic Materials, 1901-2008
This series is composed of photographs, slides, proof sheets, photograph albums, negatives and digital images.  Series III is divided into five sub-series: Photographs, Photograph Albums, Negative, Slides and Digital Images.  The series is arranged alphabetically by subject and within the subjects arranged chronologically.  Many of the images are dated and the people or horses are identified but a large number are not dated and not identified.  Most of the photographs have been digitally scanned by the Bay Meadows Library.  

The digital files consist of approximately 8,709 files (28.9 GB).  This consists of several file formats, mostly JPEG but also TIFF, PSD, WAV, CR2, TGA and DB Files.  A number of files are scanned copies of photographs or clippings in which the original physical object is in the collection but there also are a large number of files where the original is not in the collection or the file is a born digital file.

The images primarily consist of horses, horse owners, jockeys, employees, trainers, races, events, celebrities, spectators and the physical plant of Bay Meadows.

The bulk of the photographs of horses are either from a race or are the official trophy presentation photographs after a race.  The trophy presentation photographs record the name of the race, the date, the names of the winning horse, jockey, owner and trainer, the names of the second and third place horses, the winning time as well as the amount of the purse.  The photograph usually features the jockey sitting on the horse in front of the grandstand with the owners and trainers standing next to the horse.  

The photographs of employees, jockeys and trainers are primarily posed headshot photographs with a small number of candid images taken during races or events.

Some of the negatives include work from 1930-1941 by commercial photographer Joseph M.F. Haase, who worked as a racetrack photographer at a number of tracks in California.

Series IV: Citations, Certificates, and Honors, 1943-1989
Series IV consists of certificates, plaques and awards.  The bulk of this material is from 1943-1951 and is related to the support of the war effort or donations to charities during World War Two.  Some of the material regards tributes to William Kyne after his death.  This series is arranged chronologically.

Series V: Publications, 1965, 1986
This series is composed of two publications.  The first is a study by the Stanford Research Institute regarding the health and forecast of the horse racing industry in California.  The second publication is a two volume set of documents regarding a public offering of shares of the California Jockey Club and Bay Meadows Company filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.  This series is arranged chronologically.

Series VI: Audiovisual, 1962-2008
Series VI consists of audiovisual materials in the form of film reels, Beta and U-Matic cassettes, audiocassettes and DVDs.  This series is arranged by media and chronologically.  Many of the film reels and video cassettes have been converted to DVD by the Bay Meadows staff.

These documents were complied to commemorate Julie Barrow's time working at EPA in Chicago. Scrapbook is in beige with a round binding for its spine. Front and back cover of scrapbook shows a beach with several postcards: a red and white striped lighthouse; a beach chair and an umbrella overlooking the ocean. Also includes starfish, sea weed, clams, rocks in the background. Items in scrapbook includes photos, Julie Barrow's NOAA badge, cards, letters, stickers, email correspondence, post-it notes, and a ribbon from the 4th of July Parade in Half Moon Bay.

These documents were complied and used to commemorate JoAnn and Julie's time at EPA for the Going Coastal reception in Feburary 2001.
